About Us
Somali Lessons is the first and only platform that connects students with Somali teachers, primarily in East Africa. We offer language lessons online on a 1-1 basis or in small groups.
We work with vetted and qualified teachers (who speak both English and Somali) and follow a specified curriculum, although teachers are at liberty to amend and add to it as needed.
We offer our lessons at a time that’s convenient for both the students and teachers, wherever you are, in the comfort of your home.
How we enable effective learning
Our Curriculum
At Somali Lessons we believe in teaching in a structured fashion covering listening, speaking, reading and writing using a developed curriculum targeted at those who are learning Somali in the diaspora.
At the moment, we offer Level 1 (beginner) and Level 2 (intermediate) Somali.
Level 1 is for students who want to communicate in Somali, and develop basic speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills. This level is particularly suited to beginners and young kids.
Level 2 is for students who have some understanding of the language but want to improve their speaking (particularly grammar), reading and writing and gain a better understanding and appreciation of the language.
Level 1
“The alphabet level”
Writing and reading lessons/activities
- Somali alphabets; vowels and consonants, word formation.
- Cardinal Numbers, days and months in Somali.
- Vocabulary; nouns; verbs common objects, nature, family members,
colors, home, and surroundings, verbs - Nouns; masculine and feminine.
- Conjunctions and prepositions
- Pronouns and verb to be / pronoun helper
- Present continuous tense

Level 2
“The grammar level”
Writing and reading lessons/activities
- Comprehension and cultural stories
- Spelling check exercises
- Past simple tense, future continuous tense, present simple tense, conditional tenses, adjectives and adverbs, comparative and superlatives.
- In depth study of nouns; plural and singular
- Advanced phrases and verbs for common use.
- Difference between written and spoken language

Listening and speaking lessons/activities (across both levels)
- 10-15min conversation practice before every lesson
- Pronunciation practice
- Short audio stories to increase listening skills.
- Exercises including exciting stories and songs.
Pricing
Our 1-1 lessons are priced at $12 per lesson per hour. We recommend 2 lessons a week.
Group lessons are $10 per lesson per hour. Groups have a max capacity of 5 and we run multiple groups simultaneously, so there is always space.
All lessons are bought in sets of 8 or per month in advance.

We use technology specifically designed for tutoring to deliver the most impactful learning experience.
The technology we have chosen allows for interactive sessions between student and teacher to talk, sketch and share resources. All sessions are recorded for student reference with smart search enabled.
